The County Cork market town of Macroom lies in the valley of the River Sullane, mid-way between Killarney and Cork. Its railway station opened on 12th May 1866 on the Cork and Macroom Direct Line. The earliest record of racing taking place in the town was in 1845 when the Sweepstakes was won by Mr Power’s Saucepan on Thursday 13th November 1845, and after the 1846 meeting racing lapsed. The race committee met at Williams Hotel, where entries were also made, and the course was situated at Sleaveen, to the east of the town, on land owned by Jeremiah Hartnett. The meeting was revived in 1850 and continued annually until the final meeting on Wednesday 15th September 1869 when the principal race was the Hunt Chase. |
